Let’s Dance! Mustangs Ready for USCAA Tourney

Tournament Bracket / Tournament Homepage

After a 13-13 regular season, the Mustangs earned a trip to the championship as the 14th overall seed in the 16-team field. The 14-seed sets the Mustangs up with a date against the #3-ranked Bulldogs of Briarcliffe College (NY). The pair will square off at 7:30pm on Wednesday, March 7th inside Maltho Arena at Penn State-Fayette (Uniontown, PA).

The third-ranked Bulldogs had an up-and-down year against fellow top USCAA competition. Against #1 Rochester, the Bulldogs dropped a home contest, 55-46, on January 7. The Bulldogs split their home-and-home with #2 Apprentice School during the season.

After 26 contests this season, the Mustangs were led in scoring by recently named A.I.I. All-Conferences Second Team member, Keara Marks (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) at 13.2 points per game. The rebounding department was led by senior Shantinique Baker (Detroit, Mich./Kellogg CC) with 8.5 rebounds per contest. In all, the Mustangs head into the USCAA National Championship Tournament a balanced unit (three players topping double figures in scoring) paced by a strong senior corp.

The top seed in the bracket was given to Rochester College (Mich.) – a team who topped the Mustangs twice by slim margins this season. The close contests against the association’s No. 1 seed gives the Mustangs confidence heading into next week’s field.

The top-five seeds are rounded out by: (2) Apprentice, (3) Briarcliffe, (4) Selma, and (5) Southern Virginia. Seeds six-through-sixteen are: (6) Cincinnati Clermont, (7) Concordia Selma, (8) Robert Morris-Springfield, (9) Carlow, (10) Lindenwood-Belleville, (11) Spalding, (12) Berkeley, (13) Penn State-Fayette, (14) Marygrove, (15) St. Mary’s of the Woods, and (16) Central Maine CC.

The tournament will tip-off with the 2012 USCAA Skills Competition on Tuesday, March 6. The multi-event competition features participants from each institution squaring off for individual accolades in their area of highest skill. In all, the USCAA hosts three events, two of which Mustangs will compete in – Kaila Corrothers (3-point Shootout) and Shannon Farlow (Free Throw Contest).

Tuesday evening, the team will attend the national championship banquet for an evening of food and fun with all participating teams before tournament action begins the next day. The banquet is also home to the annual awards ceremony that celebrates the achievements of many USCAA student-athletes by naming them to the All-American or Academic All-American teams.
