SYLVANIA, Ohio -- The last road trip of 2012-13 meant the final boarding of the bus for seniors Justin Armstrong (Detroit, Mich./Oak Park Academy) and Cameron Coburn (Bay City, Mich./All Saints). The pair looked to upset the Gray Wolves of Lourdes University (20-7, 15-5 WHAC) on the road in Ohio before returning home for the final two contests of their collegiate careers.
The Gray Wolves, a team receiving votes nationally in this week's poll, had just enough fire power to outlast the Mustangs on a day where their nine point halftime lead (34-25) eventually ended in a 71-56 victory over the Mustangs.
Playing shorthanded without big men Kevin Dunaj (Warren, Mich./Cousino) and Manny Washington (Dearborn, Mich./Edsel Ford), the Mustangs knew their final road trip of the campaign would be an uphill battle against a streaking Gray Wolves team that came into the game winners of six straight.
In the end, the lack of depth and size hindered the Mustangs as they would fall short in the all-important rebounding category with Lourdes taking a sizeable 46-29 edge.
The rebounds eventually outdid the Mustangs as the Gray Wolves survived a second half rally that saw the Mustangs take a one-point lead into the 12-minute mark of the latter stanza. The Mustangs would be outscored 23-7 over the final 12 minutes to drop to 3-25 overall and 3-17 in the WHAC.
Jordan Al (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn) recorded the second double-double of his career by posting 13 points and corralling 10 rebounds. Freshman Diante Taylor (Battle Creek, Mich./Central) dropped in an equal 13 points to go along with eight assists and four rebounds.
Lourdes was led by Alex Davis with a game-high 24 points.
The Mustangs will return home Thursday (Feb. 14) to take on Siena Heights University in a late night 8:00 p.m. Valentine's Day tipoff. Senior Day will follow Saturday (Feb. 16) as the 2012-13 season concludes with a 3:00 p.m. tip against Northwestern Ohio.
