CINCINNATI, Ohio â The 2014-15 season tipped off Friday (Oct. 31) for Marygrove women’s basketball as the Mustangs played their first of two games in Ohio at the Cincinnati Christian Tip-Off Classic. Despite putting forth a strong effort, the Mustangs (0-1) had difficulty keeping up with the Eagles (1-0) offensively, falling to the hosts by a 95-67 final.
Entering the season-opening contest with a depleted roster, second-year head coach Craig Covington and the Mustangs were faced to play with their rotation in order to find out the best fit for the club. The shorthanded Mustangs did a fine job of keeping pace in many statistical categories, but ultimately fell short thanks to 35% shooting from the floor and 33 total rebounds.
The host Eagles countered with a 49% effort from the floor and 48 rebounds to top the visiting Mustangs by 28 points.
Raeha Weaver (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) willed her way to a game-high tying 19 points on a perfect six-for-six night from the charity stripe. The senior guard added four steals and three assists, while fellow senior Janeesa Jamierson (Battle Creek, Mich./Kellogg CC) chipped in nicely with 16 points and five rebounds.
After taking a year off from basketball, junior guard Elisha Major (Flushing, Mich./Flushing High School) was 7-of-15 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from three-point land, to post 16 points.
Beth Moorman paced the Eagles, pouring in a game-high tying 19 points to go along with six rebounds. In all, six Eagles reached double figures with Amanda Baute putting together a well-rounded line of 16 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
The Mustangs will hit the Cincinnati hardwood again Saturday (Nov. 1) when they take on Asbury (Ky.). The neutral-site matchup is slated for a 3:30 p.m. tip to open day two of the Cincinnati Christian Tip-Off Classic.
