Career Performances Tame Tigers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-A midweek showdown in Grand Rapids against the Grace Bible College Tigers was all the womens’ basketball team needed to get back on track after their three game losing streak. The Mustangs (9-11) put the pedal to the floor from the tip en route to a 95-76 taming of the Tigers.

The win is the first in four attempts for the Mustangs and is the second in as many tries over the Tigers this season (Dec. 2, 2009 – 89-57 win). It couldn’t have come at a better time as the team looks to close strong to gain a better seed for fast-approaching postseason play. The Mustangs currently rank 10th in the USCAA (top 12 advance) and need a couple key victories to move up in the rankings.

The “whacked out” stat of the night goes to the entire starting five for the contest against Grace Bible. In a rare occurrence, all five Mustangs shared career nights on the same evening. Fearless freshmen Arielle Edwards and Keara Marks combined for 64 points in the win.

Edwards (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills) ate up her local college with a career-high 30 points and 15 rebounds. Marks (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) chewed up the defense with a career-best 34 points (10 rebounds). Rounding out the freshmen was former Warren Fitzgerald Spartan, Mariah de’Nooijer. A career-high nine points eclipsed the defensive minded de’Nooijer previous career high of six set during the first meeting with the Tigers this season.

Two upperclassmen got in on the fun as well. Junior transfer Santrea Bush (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon CC) tied a career-high in points with 17, while returning sophomore guard Maria Martin (West Bloomfield, Mich./Metro State) dished her way to a new personal and program high. In all, the sophomore standout tallied a Lady Mustang record 18 assists on the night to go along with five points.

The Mustangs will look to climb within one game of the .500 mark when they hit the road for Wright State-Lakes this Saturday at 1pm. Visit, www.marygrovemustangs.com, for the latest news on the Mustangs as they push for the postseason!
